"I am so grateful for people pursuing this often thankless path because we would be nowhere without them...Thank you for lifting up teachers' voices and giving them the respect they deserve! ” - Pia Trikha, Community Member

Teacher Perspective

"Teaching can feel very lonely. I take my profession as a personal call to action from the Universe, and I don’t always know if others heard that call like I did. Teachers of Oakland has helped me to know that yes, oh, yes, others heard it. And didn’t just hear it, but do this work like lives depend us. That’s the kind of encouragement that can turn a mountain into a freeway. That’s Teachers of Oakland."

Meet some teachers

Vernon keeve iii

English Teacher at East Bay Innovation Academy

“In POC (people of color) communities, we don’t talk about mental health enough. I was trying to figure out what strategies I could utilize to get the next generation to think about mental health, to get help when they need it, to wholly be vulnerable. How could I use my classroom to disrupt the toxic masculinity that was inevitably forming?”

Emily bean

Kindergarden Teacher at Melrose Leadership Academy

“My driving principle is – what are the issues that matter most to me, and how can I construct my life around working to better the world around those issues? When Alexandria Ocasio Cortez recently talked about moral clarity – that’s a phrase that stuck with me. I have a lot of moral clarity, and I think that’s something our society needs a lot more of.”

Nidya Baez

Leadership Teacher and AP at Fremont High School

“I’ve been hurt by a lot of things in my community, but I have this crazy hope. I’m proud of my spirit. My dad was shot when I was 8, here in Oakland. That history of violence is something I hold very close to me. And THAT is why I have to build a relationship with every kid – because that kid, that day, for whatever reason, decided to make that stupid choice. And I’m proud to say that doesn’t make me scared of kids.

Judy Lee

Judy Lee

Pre-K Teacher at Brookfield CDC

“I just see a lot of potential. And just because they drive you crazy one day, that doesn’t mean that’s it for the rest of their lives, you know? They will become something that’s really powerful.”
